MotePDF

What this feature does:

MotePDF is Mote's product for hosting and working with PDFs. Open a PDF, Export it to Mote and use any Sidebar feature to make the document accessible (Read Aloud, Translation, Dictionary, Highlighter, Screen Mask, and move). MotePDF also adds PDF-specific mark-up tools: highlighting, annotation, and text boxes directly on the page.

Why it matters:

  • Gives students with dyslexia, visual processing difficulties, or reading delays auditory access to PDF content they couldn't decode independently before
  • Supports multilingual learners with inline dictionary and translation tools for academic PDFs and textbook chapters
  • Enables independent access to research papers, worksheets, and supplementary materials without requiring a teacher or aide to read aloud
  • Allows students with motor impairments or dysgraphia to annotate and respond to PDFs using voice typing instead of handwriting

MTSS:

  • Tier 1: Universal access to PDF materials for all students
  • Tier 2/3: Intensive support for students with print disabilities, language barriers, or motor challenges

UDL Principles:

  • Multiple means of representation: auditory access to visual text, inline vocabulary support, and customizable reading experience
  • Multiple means of action and expression: voice typing and digital annotation remove handwriting barriers
  • Reduces barriers for students who struggle with decoding print or producing written responses

Bonus Points:

Mote's Sidebar tools already work on accessible PDFs without MotePDF — MotePDF is what makes any hosted PDF fully workable and adds the mark-up tools. Pairs well with Read Aloud for textbook chapters, Webpage Translation for ELL students working on worksheets, and Speech to Text for students completing PDF responses.
