Admin Feature Controls

Feature Access sets a Mote feature for every student in the school, with three states: On, Off for all, and Off by default.

What this feature does:

Feature Access is the account-level control, found under My School, that sets a feature for every student in the school rather than class by class. Each feature has three states:

  • On: available to everyone.
  • Off for all: unavailable, and no teacher can turn it back on.
  • Off by default: the decision stays with the teacher, who can turn it on through Teacher Feature Controls.

When a feature is unavailable, students are told why, and teachers can see which admin set it.

Why it matters:

  • Off by default leaves the decision with the teacher rather than taking it away, which is the difference between a policy and a block
  • Districts can meet assessment and acceptable-use policy without disabling tools students depend on
  • Students are told why a feature is unavailable, instead of assuming it is broken
  • Teachers can see which admin set it, so the conversation goes to the right person

MTSS:

  • Tier 1: A consistent baseline of tools across the institution
  • Tier 2/3: Teachers retain the ability to enable tools for the students who need them

UDL Principles:

  • Multiple means of engagement: decisions made close to the student where possible
