Read Aloud

Read Aloud on iPhone, iPad and Mac plays web pages and documents in natural voices, highlighting each word as it is spoken.

What this feature does:

Read Aloud in Mote for iOS turns any item in a student's library into speech. Web pages, documents and scanned text play back in natural voices with each word highlighted as it is read, and playback speed adjusts from 0.5x to 2.0x. A student can pick the voice that suits them and pick up from the last word read.

Why it matters:

  • Removes the decoding barrier for students who cannot read fluently, on the device they already have in their hand
  • Word-by-word highlighting pairs what a student hears with what they see, supporting the reading itself rather than replacing it
  • Adjustable speed lets a student slow down for dense text or speed up for review
  • Brings Mote to iPad classrooms that cannot run a Chrome extension

MTSS:

  • Tier 1: Universal access to text for every student
  • Tier 2/3: Core accommodation for students with dyslexia or reading disabilities

UDL Principles:

  • Multiple means of representation: the same content offered as audio and text together
