One sidebar

Everything a student needs to read and write. And everything a teacher wishes they had time to make.

For students

Hear any text read aloud in a natural voice.

Write with prediction, spelling, and grammar help.

Read any page in 60+ languages.

For teachers

Add Read Aloud to a Google Form in one click.

Leave voice feedback in seconds, not paragraphs.

Reach every reader without building two versions.

What it is

The Mote Chrome extension sits on every student and teacher's device. Clicking it opens the Sidebar, with reading, writing, and creating tools that help students engage with content and communicate. It also lets teachers add Read Aloud to a Google Form in one click, and make audio-accessible learning materials.

Where it works

Google Docs

Text Prediction as students write, Read Aloud to listen back to their own recordings, and voice feedback from teachers.

Google Slides

Embedded voice notes for directions, plus the Dictionary and Read Aloud, including Read Aloud on graphics and images.

Google Forms

Accessible Forms with Translation and Read Aloud in one click.

Google Classroom

Record spoken instructions for students, right where they collect their work.

Any webpage

Every Sidebar tool works on any page students visit.

PDFs

Click Open with Mote on any PDF and use the full toolkit on it, powered by MotePDF.

Reading apps

Read Aloud works in Sora and Epic, so students keep the same reading accommodations there.

How to get started

Set up once. Every tool, on every page, from then on.

01

Add Mote to Chrome

02

Pin it to your toolbar

03

Open the Sidebar

04

Pick a mode

05

Try any tool, anywhere

Open the Mote listing on the Chrome Web Store and click Add to Chrome. On managed Chromebooks, an IT admin can push Mote to every student device from the Google Admin console, so nobody has to install it themselves.

Click the puzzle piece icon at the top right of Chrome, find Mote in the list, and click the pin. Mote then sits in the toolbar, one click away on every page.

Click the Mote icon to open the Sidebar, then sign in with Google or ClassLink SSO. There is no separate account to create. The Sidebar can sit vertically or horizontally, and it expands or minimises to suit the student.

Use the mode selector at the top of the Sidebar. Reading holds Play Page, Select Area to Read, Translation, Highlighter, Screen Mask and Dictionary. Writing holds Text Prediction, Speech to Text and Review My Writing. Creating holds voice recording and audio tools. Focus Mode strips a page back to just its content.

Open any webpage, Google Doc, Slide, Form or PDF and press Play Page. Every Sidebar tool works the same way wherever the student is, so there is nothing new to learn per app.
