Mote Writing Review

Mote Writing Review checks spelling, homophones, syntax and grammar, and explains why each issue is wrong instead of fixing it for the student.

What this feature does:

Mote Writing Review checks a student's writing for spelling, homophones (their / there / they're), syntax and grammar. Clicking Review My Writing in the Chrome Extension's Writing Mode takes the student to Mote Writing Review on their Mote dashboard; it does not happen inline on the page they were writing on.

Every flagged issue comes with a plain-language explainer of why it is wrong. There is no accept button: on a suggestion, I'll fix it hands the correction back to the student, and a confirmation step then checks what they wrote.

Explanations can be played aloud, and the audio leans on the words being compared, so the difference between their and there is one a student can hear, not just read.

Why it matters:

  • An ordinary spellchecker's red squiggle tells a student that something is wrong, not why, so they fix it and learn nothing
  • Catches homophone errors that spellcheckers miss entirely, because both spellings are real words
  • No accept button means the student makes the correction themselves, building independence rather than dependence on the tool
  • Audio explanations stress the words being compared, so the difference is audible for students who cannot see it on the page

MTSS:

  • Tier 1: Every student gets the reason behind a correction
  • Tier 2/3: Explicit, repeated instruction on the patterns a student keeps getting wrong

UDL Principles:

  • Multiple means of representation: explanations offered as text and audio
  • Multiple means of action and expression: the student makes the edit, not the tool

Pairs well with Text Prediction and Dictation for students who need scaffolding across the writing process.
